Apichatpong Weerasethakul b. 1970
He grew up in Khon Kaen, a city in Issan, the north-eastern region Thailand, where he studied Architecture, and later specialized in filmmaking at the School of Art Institute of Chicago. He founded his company, Kick the Machine Films in 1999.
“Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives” has won a Palme d’Or prize at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival in 2010. He has been working as a film maker and also, making many installations as an artist. A large-scale video installation, “Primitive”, was exhibited at many museums including Haus der Kunsten Welt, Berlin in 2009. His first performance piece, “Fever Room” (2015), was shown in Korea, Japan, France and his first VR piece, “A Conversation with the Sun” was performed at Aichi Triennale in 2022 and Germany in 2023.
His recent representative exhibitions are Venezia Biennale, Italy (2019), “Locus” EYE Film Museum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands (2017).
He has his first solo show in Thailand at MIIAM Contemporary Art Museum in Chiang Mai in 2016. He participated in Documenta 13 in collaboration with Chai Siris.
Also, Apichatpong received the Sharjah Biennial Prize, UAE in 2013, the Fukuoka Prize, Japan, 2013 and the Ordre des Arts et des Letters, France in 2011 and so on.
