In this work, red and green LEDs are alternately set one by one on a long aluminum panel. The numbers in red count from one to nine, while the ones in green go down from nine to one. The counters never display zero, which for Miyajima represents a decisive beginning or end, thus indicating a linear notion of life. As suggested by the title, the work amalgamates complementary colors of LEDs counting in opposite directions that nevertheless form a continuous interrelationship. Here, Miyajima also refers to the harmony of Yin and Yang, a Chinese philosophical concept of opposite but interconnected forces as well as the cycle of nature and how the same kind of living energy, rhythm, and invisible order can be seen in DNAs in a single cell.
